HEART IMBALANCES

Deficient Heart Blood
TONGUE: thin, pale, slightly dry
PULSE: choppy or Fine
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: palpitations - more at night, dizziness, insomnia, poor memory, dream-disturbed sleep, easily startled, pale lips, dull-pale complexion. 
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
insomnia, neurasthenia, asthma, cor pulmonale, anxious
depression

Deficient Heart QI
TONGUE: pale, normal color, possibly has center crack to tip with swelling on either side
PULSE: empty, short in Heart position
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: palpitations - light and occaisional, shortness of breath on exertion, sweating, pale complexion, tiredness, listlessness
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
angina, asthma, anemia, depression, heart arrhythmia, orthostatic hypotension

Deficient Heart Yang 
TONGUE: pale, wet, swollen
PULSE: deep, weak, possibly knotted
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: palpitations, shortness of breath on exertion, tiredness, listlessness, stuffiness or tightness in heart region, sensation of cold, bright and pale complexion, cold limbs, cold hands.
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
bronchiectasis, heart arrhythmia, angina, heart attack, congestive heart failure

Deficient Heart Yang - Collapsed
TONGUE: very pale, possibly bluish-purple, short body
PULSE: hidden, minute, knotted
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: palpitrations, shortness of breath, weak and shallow breathing, profuse sweating, cold limbs, cyanosis of the lips, possibly coma.
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
heart attack, angina, life-threatening respiratory distress

Deficient Heart Yin 
TONGUE: red, no coat, central crack, possibly redder tip
PULSE: any combination of floating, rapid, fine
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: palpitations, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, easily startled, poor memory, anxiety, mental restlessness, fidgetiness, malar flush (redness of cheeks only or cheeks redder than surrounding area), low-grade fever, sensation of heat - esp. in the evening, night sweats, dry mouth, dry throat, sensation of warmth or heat in palms and/or soles.

hyperthyroidism, mania, menopausal syndrome, mouth ulcers

Heart Fire Blazing 
TONGUE: red, redder tip with tiny red dots, swollen, possible midline crack.
PULSE: full, rapid, overflowing, possibly hurried 
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: palpitations, thirst, mouth and tongue ulcers, mental restlesness, agitation, sensation of heat, insomnia, red complexion, dark urine, blood in the urine, bitter taste in the mouth.

stomatitis, glomerulonephritis, urethritis,

Phlegm Misting the Heart (and affecting the mind)
TONGUE: thick sticky slippery coat, center crack with thorns to tip 
PULSE: slippery 
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: confusion, lethargic stupor, rattling sound in the throat, vomiting unconsciousness, aphasia.

mania, insomnia, depression, seizure disorder, cerbrovascular accident (stroke)

Phlegm Heat/Fire Agitating Within
TONGUE: red, yellow sticky coat, center crack with yellow thorns, possibly redder tip with red dots
PULSE: full, slippery, rapid
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: palpitations, mental restlesnes, bitter taste in the mouth, dream- disturbed sleep, easily startled, incoherence, confusion, rash behavior, aggressive behavior (e.g.scolding or hitting people), radical mood swings (e.g. uncontrolled laughing or crying, muttering, mental dullness, depression), possibly aphasia or coma.
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
