STOMACH IMBALANCES

COLD INVADING STOMACH
TONGUE: thick white coat PULSE: deep, slow, tight
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: sudden pain in the stomach area, feeling of cold or preferring warmth, vomiting clear fluids, feeling worse after consuming cold drinks which are quickly vomited, preference for warm drinks. 
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
morning sickness, migraine headaches, hypertension, gastritis, gastroenteritis, Meniere’s disease, neurogenic headache

DEFICIENT AND COLD STOMACH 
TONGUE: pale swollen body PULSE: deep, weak, 
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: discomfort in the stomach region which is worse after bowel movements, better after eating and/or pressure and/or massage, no appetite, prefernce for warm drinks and foods, vomiting of clear fluids, loose stools, no thirst, cold limbs, tiredness.
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
pancreatitis, gasteroenteritis, gastritis, gastric or duodenal ulcer, biliary ascariasis, kidney stones, chronic cholecystitis, intestinal spasms

DEFICIENT STOMACH QI
TONGUE: pale body PULSE: empty
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: discomfort in the stomach area, no appetite,
lack of taste, loose stools, tiredness - esp. in the morning, weak limbs.
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
anorexia nervosa, areophagia, muscular dystrophy

DEFICIENT STOMACH YIN
TONGUE: red body, coat is poorly rooted or peeled in the center 
PULSE: floating, empty
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: no appetite, fever or feeling of heat in the afternoon, constipation, dry stools, pain in the stomach region, dry mouth, dry throat, thirst with desire to drink in small sips or without desire to drink, feeling stuffed after eating.

hepatitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, dehydration, indigestion

FIRE OR PHLEGM FIRE IN THE STOMACH
TONGUE: red body, thick yellow dry coat - possibly central crack with yellow thorns
PULSE: full, deep, rapid
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: burning sensation and pain in the stomach region, thirst with desire to drink cold liquids, constant hunger, swelling and pain in the gums, bleeding gums, sour belching, constipation, nausea, bad breath, vomiting soon after eating.

asthma, bipolar disorder, periodontal disease, esophageal reflux, mania

RETENTION OF FOOD IN THE STOMACH
TONGUE: thick coat
PULSE: full, slippery
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: no appetite, fullness and disension of the stomach region which are relieved by vomiting, nausea, bad breath, sour belching, insomnia.

gastritis, indigestion, gastroenteritis, gastric ulcer


STAGNATION OF BLOOD IN THE STOMACH
TONGUE: purple body with purple spots PULSE: wiry, choppy
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: stabbing pain in the stomach region which is worse with heat and pressure, pain after eating, blood in the stools, vomiting dark blood.
SOME COINCIDENT WESTERN MEDICINE DISEASES:
stomach or intestinal cancer, acute gastrointestinal ulcers

STOMACH QI REBELLING UPWARD 
TONGUE: no signs
PULSE: tight
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS: nausea, belching, hiccup, vomiting
